Starting your final year what are your options University of Manchester Careers Blog

Starting your final year what are your options University of Manchester Careers Blog There is a lot of talk about graduate schemes and you will see big employers on campus a lot! BUT they are not the only option for graduate employment in fact most graduates do not do a graduate scheme. Whatever you decide to do start early so that you can identify the time of year when you need to apply. So what are the options and where do you start? Firstly you need to identify What type of skills you have and want to use. What type of job role, occupation or profession you want to go into If  there is a specific sector thats important to you? Science, education, not for profit, financeetc What type of company you want to work for,  big or small? Do you have a preferred location? You may know the answers to some, all or none of these questions. Confused?? Try our I dont know what I want to do guide Go to some employer talks, fairs or skills sessions to help you work out what matters to you. or come and  talk to us about where to start. So what is a graduate scheme anyway? Large, often multinational  companies need a lot of staff.   In different roles and often in different offices, its worth their while to do bulk recruitment every year to get the talent they need. Because they could be employing hundreds of staff, the recruitment process can take a long time hence they tend to start a year in advance, around September. They tend to have multiple rounds and multiple stages to their recruitment often using tests to help identify the right candidates. See our graduate scheme FAQs What if a graduate scheme is not for me? If you want to work in a smaller organisation or in a sector where graduate schemes are not common dont worry there are plenty of options and you may have a bit more flexibility about when to apply too.   Smaller companies are often more agile in their recruitment, if you need just 1 or 2 staff it takes a lot less time. Jobs can be advertised at any time of year so keep a look out.   Find out more about where different types of jobs are advertised Im not sure im ready for a graduate job, I need more experience Many students feel unconfident and  that they dont have enough experience.   There are some different options here Companies have different expectations depending on the skills they need, but many will hire graduates of any discipline and are only looking for good transferable skills and an interest in that sector or role.   It is after all a Graduate TRAINING Scheme, you will be trained. Its not too late to get some more experience Demonstrate your commitment by doing your research and talking to  employers at events and fairs. Try to attend an insight or visit day if there any at the start of the year. Get a mentor in that field Applications for Manchester Gold open in September. Use linkedIn and the Manchester Network to make connections. If you are interested in Media or Not for profit jobs  join Media club or Third Sector club, youll be able to meet with people working in those areas and pick up valuable advice. Personality Test - Writing a Resume

Personality Test - Writing a ResumeThe Enneagram is a personality test that is used for people who are seeking jobs or are looking to start a new career. It is primarily used by employers to determine what the job seeker has in common with the skills and characteristics that they have. There are many resources online where you can learn how to write a resume, and there are many that will help you decide what type of resume to use. For example, there are several free resources that will offer you tips and guides to writing resumes. One of the free sources is that resume builder and resource from ToastFork that was mentioned earlier.Designing a resume that works for you can be difficult because everyone's personality is different. This means that each individual's resume has certain qualities that make it different. What is nice about resume builder is that they offer an assortment of options so that you can have a variety of resumes with different styles. You can also choose a style th at is tailored to what you have already learned about your strengths and weaknesses. One of the main aspects of this personality type that you will want to look at is your friends, family, and associates. Write down things that your friends say about you. Also take a look at the types of events that they attend so that you can see if there is something there that is not written about. Having something written about it will help you see that you did something that your potential employer liked about you. Then go on to do some research and find out all about the various projects that you have been involved in. It will be helpful to do this if your resume is actually designed around these projects. If your resume is not going to show these types of accomplishments, then you will want to put them on your resume. Also, using your friends as references will show that you have a good and positive relationship with them and that you are a nice person.Another important part to look at is the d ates and places that you have lived. Take note of what the places are like. You should make sure that your resume looks very professional and that it contains your accomplishments. Having your accomplishments outlined in your resume will prove that you are the type of person that employers look for.Writing a resume that describes your experiences is a good thing. However, you also need to make sure that it is grammatically correct so that it will be read properly. This means that you will need to practice as much as possible to ensure that you are able to write this type of resume.Personality type is something that is very subjective. The fact that you are looking for employment with one specific company is going to have a big impact on the type of resume that you will create. Make sure that you spend time getting your resume to look as professional as possible and then you can be sure that it will speak well of you.

Were taking a long break - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Were taking a long break - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I started Woohoo Inc back in 2003 so we have been spreading happiness at work for over 16 years. Our keynotes, workshops, articles, conferences, videos and books have reached millions of people all over the world. But something is wrong. For the last couple of years I have been unhappy at work and that wont really do for someone in my business :) Its hard to pinpoint exactly why work stopped being fun for me, but here are three reasons that have played a role: For a long time weve been working on the same level, i.e. the same number of clients, the same number of readers on our articles and books, the same number of views on our videos, the same number of participants at our events, etc. Ive tried many things to develop the business to reach more people but little of it has worked and when things stand still, I get bored. There are too many people in this field who attract attention by saying either platitudes or unverifiable nonsense. For instance, some recent bestselling books have claimed that positive feedback is bad for you, that we should resist growth and development, that we should ignore emotions at work or that work should be duty not passion. Its frustrating to have to refute dumb claims like this over and over again. My previous longest stint in the same job was 5 years, so this has been 3 times as long. Maybe 16 years doing the same thing is simply enough for me. Simply put, its time for me to take my own medicine and do something to become happy at work again so from January 1st Im shutting the company down for 6 months to go traveling. What will happen after that? I have no idea :) Fortunately we have built a fantastic international partner network over the last 3 years who have all been trained in our methods and? who are doing amazing work around the world. They are ready to step in while were gone. So if youre looking for a speaker or consultant to come in and make your organization happier and more profitable, dont hesitate for a second to book any of them. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. And if you want more great tips and ideas you should check out our newsletter about happiness at work. It's great and it's free :-)Share this:LinkedInFacebookTwitterRedditPinterest Related

Come Out, Come Out, Whoever You Are

Come Out, Come Out, Whoever You Are I Make My Own Rules by  Jessica Swift I wrote this way back when in early 2010, but it applies now, what I wrote then. But even if its not new to you, read to the end for a special way to make your uniquity dreams come true! (part of my uniquity is never resisting a rhyme, and I think its just dandy-fine!) The biggest thing I learned when I pounded the pavement as an actor was, well, me â€" my uniquity, my spark, what makes me different where I thrive. From those handful of post-college years, I learned that I loved ( got cast!) singing loud funny; creating new, SNL-like characters; portraying multiple roles at once; being quirky / enthusiastic / spunky / offbeat. Once I put those pieces together the lightbulb went off over my head (I may or may not have shouted, “Eureka!”), I made sure to absolutely positively bring my quirky, spunky, offbeat enthusiasm into the room the first time I entered, whether it was visually with the polka-dot dress I wore (with matching headband!) the headshot with a bright blue background or audibly with the song I sang to show that I was both funny loud (with a killer mix/belt)! Allowing me to be me let me be secure with bringing myself into the room put me at ease almost instantly. I’ve been able to bring that in to my coaching, pair it with wh at I know makes me spark (writing, speaking, coaching, collaborating, relationship building). I’m able to look see what is in line with my authenticity, because I know what makes me, um, me. I have two clients I’m currently working with that are going through just that. These are vivacious, fun, enthusiastic, funny, talented, inspiring women who don’t quite believe that what they have to offer â€" their particular services as well as their engaging personalities â€" would equate to anything that anyone would pay for. These two women in particular are looking to work for themselves, but even if they were applying for jobs where someone else wrote the paycheck, they would come across the same dilemma: Buttoning themselves up, not allowing their real selves to shine through, thinking they had to be a certain way/thing/person in order to get the job. They probably wouldn’t take the time or effort to discover where they shine what gives them their uniquity, having the world miss out on that makes me sad. Whether you’re an artist launching a new Etsy shop or a writer looking for a full-time gig or an assistant looking to enter PR, being authentic is what will set you apart. Some will call it Branding, but how boring is that ( hello, what a way to bring on a case of the Shoulds!) Your uniquity is what makes you interesting.  Your uniquity is what others will relate to. Your uniquity is what will get you the sales, the clients, and/or the job. Your uniquity is why people will want to work with you. Your uniquity  is  you. But how do you find your uniquity? Do something scary  ask your friends family why they like hanging out with you.Better yet, get it in writing or set-up a free survey so you can see the overall “winning” traits. Is is your sense of humor, the well-thought-out opinions of the Obama presidency, or the way you can put together the cutest outfit ever? If that is way too super scary, write down the names of your Top 10 Friends (don’t worry â€" unless this is Mean Girls nobody’ll see it) the reason you hang out with them. Then put yourself in their shoes ask yourself what you bring to their table. Be honest egotistical â€" you can always buy new hats to fit your swelled head. Now brainstorm how you can bring those attributes into your resume, your shop, your website, your blog, your Twitter stream, your Mom’s house….(see, I brought in a Your Mom joke â€" one of my favorite things!) Look back over any job review /or thank you note/email/phone call, make a note of the attributes that were pointed out to you.Did a friend thank you for setting them up on that blind date with your high school pal? Seems like you’re a good connector. Did your boss make note of how your colleagues perform better than usual when they’re on a project with you? Sounds like you’re a great leader/inspirer/motivator. Write down these traits keep them in your front pocket. Do a stream-of-consciousness writing exercises for 15 minutes (set the timer!) of things you love to do. It could be as simple as, “Go shopping with Sally” or as complicated as “Throw my Mom a surprise party for 100 people.” What have you done in your life that you’ve felt happy, or useful, or un-self-conscious, or free, or in touch? Those situations define you, as well as giving you clues to the authentic you. Pay attention to them, do what you can to bring more of them into your life. Carry a notebook with you write down whenever you feel authentic why as well as when someone thanks you why. Put a week or two’s worth of notes together you can really get all the pieces of the puzzle (“Felt authentic when I thanked the barista she smiled at me- Like being friendly, or feel like I put some Nice into the world”). Think of what Your Perfect Day would hold if you had to work during it. Where would you be? Who would be with you? What would you be doing? If nothing’s coming, close your eyes take the pressure off yourself. Just wait for it. Once you have that image, or that movie in your mind, write it down or draw it or paint it or make it into a cartoon. Just make sure that you slay the Vampires that come out during it, especially the Yeah-Like-That’ll-Happen Vampire the I’m-Not-Qualified Vampire the I-Can’t-Really-Make-Money-From-That Vampire. They’re not welcome here. (2012 update!:  Register for Unveiling Your Uniquity ( How the Heck to Apply It To Your Passionate Career), the 90-min virtual workshop Im hosting next Thurs, April 12th!) Finding your authentic attributes the things that make you spark is the way to really figure out who you are what you have to offer. Only then can you go out into the world create a life that supports it. And who wouldn’t want a life that’s supported by your true self? Dummies. That’s who. And that aint you. True!
